The construction of the Shanghai East Railway Station, part of the Oriental Hub project, has achieved a significant milestone, entering the main construction phase of the station building.
The Shanghai East Railway Station is located in Zhuqiao Town, Pudong New Area, about 5 kilometers from Terminal 1 of Shanghai Pudong International Airport. With a total construction area of over 1.3 million square meters, including about 160,000 square meters for the high-speed railway station, the station will feature 15 platforms and 30 tracks. Upon completion, it will become a large-scale integrated transportation hub combining national railways, regional railways, urban rail transit, and airport express services.
The station building, structure, and decor collectively interpret the shape of the magnolia, Shanghai's city flower, reflecting the city's culture and spirit while infusing the station with color and vitality.
This hub is the first high-speed railway station in China to incorporate an aviation module. The distance from the railway exit gates to the aviation security checkpoint is only 250 meters. The "air-rail intermodal" system will provide services such as passenger check-in and airline baggage check, enabling seamless transfers between the station and Pudong International Airport.
According to the planning, the Shanghai East Railway Station will connect to the second phase of the Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong Railway and the Shanghai-Zhapu-Hangzhou Railway, while also introducing multiple lines such as the Shanghai-Suzhou-Huzhou High-Speed Railway and the Shanghai-Nanjing Yangtze River High-Speed Railway. Additionally, the station will be linked to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and Shanghai Pudong International Airport via the Shanghai Airport Express.
The Shanghai East Railway Station is scheduled to be operational by July 2027. Upon completion, it will help Shanghai establish a transportation pattern of "Hongqiao Hub in the west and Oriental Hub in the east," becoming a world-class transportation hub connecting the Yangtze River Delta with the globe.
The commercial project in front of the Shanghai East Railway Station commenced construction this month. Zhao Xuwei, director of the Planning and Technology Department of Oriental Hub Group, said that the commercial project covers a total area of 134 mu, with a total construction area of 380,000 square meters and an investment of about 4 billion yuan (US$552.49 million). It will include commercial complexes, five-star hotels, and office spaces.
