Waigaoqiao boosts bioengineering, pharma industry capabilities

Waigaoqiao has enhanced its strength in the bioengineering and pharmaceutical industry after a batch of new industry players opted to develop in the free trade zone, including Shanghai Pharmaceuticals Holding Co Ltd, a modern provider of pharmaceutical supply chain services, that signed a cooperation agreement with Waigaoqiao.

The signing ceremony was held during the 2021 Second Waigaoqiao Medical Health Cooperation Summit on November 25.

“Accelerating the research and production of core technologies, including the bioengineering and pharmaceutical industry, strengthening global resources allocation ability and building some world-level innovation industry clusters is not just a task given to Pudong by the nation but a historical opportunity for us,” said Chen Yanfeng, deputy director of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone Administration and Shanghai FTZ Authority.

The Pudong New Area recently set targets in the three core industries – the bioengineering and pharmaceutical industry, integrated circuit and artificial intelligence – to improve its economic layout by integrating labs, business incubators, accelerators and characteristic industry parks, during the fifth National Congress of the Communist Party of China.

So far, Waigaoqiao has formed a full industry chain regarding the bioengineering and pharmaceutical industry, based on pharmaceuticals, medical equipment import and export trade, third-party logistics distribution, domestic distribution and other businesses, expanding to the fields of research and development, production, testing, consulting, training, and technical services.

By the end of 2020, Waigaoqiao had more than 800 bioengineering and pharmaceutical companies whose businesses ranged from research, production, distribution, technology services, and hospitals, to medical equipment leasing.

“The construction of the whole life cycle and industrial ecology is the core competitiveness of Waigaoqiao,” said Han Yan, general manager of the Waigaoqiao Fudan University Science Park Innovation Center.

The Waigaoqiao Bioengineering and Pharmaceutical Industry Park is also one of the five characteristic medical industry parks of Shanghai.
