Pudong Peony Festival opens with top peony varieties

The 2026 Pudong Sunland Peony Festival opened on March 27 at the Pudong Peony Garden.

This year’s festival features 55 peony varieties from Luoyang in Henan Province, Heze in Shandong Province and other regions, and for the first time brings together the four most renowned peony varieties in Chinese horticulture.

In addition to the floral displays, the festival incorporates peony-inspired cuisine and market experiences, allowing visitors to not only enjoy the beauty of spring but also taste it.

At the opening ceremony, the Shanghai Pudong Development Group handed over a statue of the Peony Fairy, a piece rich in historical memory, to the Pudong Peony Garden, adding an important cultural touchstone to the park.

Since the Pudong Peony Garden first opened in 2023, the Sunland Peony Festival has attracted nearly one million visitors. This year’s festival features upgraded peony varieties, with flowers in different colors, shapes and blooming periods, making the viewing experience more diverse throughout April and effectively extending the time visitors spend in the garden. The best viewing period is expected to begin after the Qingming Festival.

The festival also offers a wider range of interactive activities. At the opening ceremony, a traditional Chinese-style performance took place on the central lake, and twelve “Flower Fairy” NPCs roamed the garden to interact with visitors.

The peony festival will run until April 26.
